Hard water in Peoria, IL: how hard it is and how to clean the stains

Short answer: yes, Peoria has very hard water. Illinois American Water lists total hardness of 300 to 600 mg/L (19 to 37 grains per gallon) for its Peoria district, which serves Peoria, Chillicothe, Dunlap and nearby towns[1], and 470 mg/L (28 grains per gallon) for Pekin[2]. The USGS calls anything above 180 mg/L very hard[3]. That's why shower glass spots, fixtures crust over and glasses come out cloudy. White vinegar or a cleaner labeled for hard-water deposits takes most of it off[4][6]; a squeegee after every shower keeps it from coming back[6]; and on marble or travertine, use no acid at all[7].

Updated 2026-10-27. Water figures come from the utility's own published sheets and are quoted as published (read on 2026-10-27); items marked Wrenly suggestion are our own advice as a cleaning service. How hard is Peoria-area water?

Hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water, measured as calcium carbonate[3]. Illinois American Water's Peoria district draws from the Illinois River and three well sites and supplies about 23 million gallons a day[1]; its Pekin district runs on wells[2]. Both are well past the USGS line for very hard water[3].

Morton, Washington, East Peoria, Peoria Heights and the other towns we serve have their own water systems, which aren't covered here. Every community water system publishes a yearly water quality report that lists hardness, and a home test kit tells you what comes out of your own tap. If you have a softener, your tap water will be softer than these figures.

What hard water does to a house

Soap reacts with the calcium in hard water to form soap scum, so you need more soap or detergent to get things clean, and glasses come out of the dishwasher spotted or filmy[3]. When the water evaporates or is heated, it leaves white mineral scale on showerheads, faucets, glass doors and fixtures, and inside water heaters and pipes[3][5]. Showerheads and faucets scale up fastest because warm surfaces dry quickly[5]. Bathrooms and kitchens in a hard-water house simply need cleaning more often[4].

How to clean hard water stains, surface by surface

WhereWhat worksSource
Showerhead and faucet aeratorFill a sandwich bag with white vinegar, slip it over the showerhead or faucet, and leave it a few hours. Then rinse, wipe and dry. If the flow is still weak, take the head apart and soak the scaled pieces.Clemson HGIC[5]; CT DPH[6]
Glass shower door and shower wallsWipe with white vinegar (or a vinegar and lemon juice mix), or use a bathroom cleaner labeled for hard-water deposits or soap scum, then rinse and dry. Prevention is the bigger win: squeegee the glass and walls after each shower.CT DPH[6]; UNL Extension[4]
Tub, sink and toilet bowlUse a non-abrasive cleaner made to remove mineral deposits (these often contain phosphoric acid, and toilet bowl cleaners use stronger acids). Skip harsh scouring powders: they scratch the finish, and a scratched surface gets dirty faster and stains deeper.UNL Extension[4]
Drinking glasses and the dishwasherVinegar removes hard-water film from glassware. Run white vinegar through the dishwasher and coffee maker every couple of months, and follow each appliance maker's advice for hard water.UNL Extension[4]; CT DPH[6]
Marble, limestone or travertine (and sealed stone)No vinegar, lemon or other acids: they can dull or etch calcareous stone. Use a neutral stone cleaner or mild dish soap and warm water, a non-acidic soap scum remover in the shower, and a squeegee after each use.Natural Stone Institute[7]
Rust-colored or black stainsThose usually aren't hardness: reddish stains are likely iron and brownish or black ones manganese, which need a different cleaner (rust removers).UNL Extension[4]

A few cautions. Vinegar is a weak acid, about 4 to 8 percent acetic acid[4], which is why it dissolves scale and also why it doesn't belong on marble, limestone or travertine[7]. Chlorine bleach can dull shiny porcelain enamel[4]. Never mix ammonia and bleach; together they make a toxic gas[7]. Test any cleaner on a small hidden spot first and follow the fixture or glass maker's care instructions (Wrenly suggestion).

Keeping it from coming back

What a Wrenly clean covers

Every visit cleans and disinfects the tub or shower, sink, mirrors and fixtures. A deep clean adds shower and tub detailing: soap scum and hard-water spots on the walls, glass door and fixtures, and the grout (see the deep cleaning checklist). We use non-abrasive products and keep acids off natural stone. Years of buildup or glass that is already etched may not come all the way back in one visit; if so, we'll tell you rather than scour it. We don't install softeners, descale water heaters or do any plumbing. If something on the checklist is missed, tell us within 48 hours under our re-clean guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Does Peoria, IL have hard water?

Yes. Illinois American Water's typical water quality sheet for its Peoria district (Peoria, Bartonville, Bellevue, Rome, Chillicothe, Dunlap and West Peoria) lists total hardness of 300 to 600 mg/L as calcium carbonate, or 19 to 37 grains per gallon. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies anything above 180 mg/L as very hard. The water comes from the Illinois River and three well sites.

How hard is Pekin's water?

Illinois American Water's Pekin district, which is supplied by wells, lists total hardness of 470 mg/L, or 28 grains per gallon, which is very hard on the USGS scale (above 180 mg/L).

What about Morton, Washington, East Peoria and Peoria Heights?

Those towns are served by their own water systems, which this page doesn't cover. Every community water system publishes an annual water quality report (consumer confidence report) that lists hardness; check your town's report or ask the utility. A home test kit also shows your tap's hardness.

How do you get hard water stains off a glass shower door?

Wipe the glass with white vinegar, or a bathroom cleaner labeled for hard-water deposits or soap scum, then rinse and dry it. Don't use harsh scouring powder, which scratches. To keep the spots from coming back, squeegee the glass after every shower. If your shower is marble, limestone or travertine, keep vinegar and other acids off the stone.

Is hard water harmful?

No known negative health effects, according to the Connecticut Department of Public Health's hardness fact sheet, and the USGS notes the calcium and magnesium can even contribute to diet. The problems are cosmetic and mechanical: soap scum, spotted glasses, white crust on fixtures, and scale in water heaters, pipes and appliances.

Will a water softener stop hard water stains?

Softening removes the calcium and magnesium that leave the deposits, so it cuts down on scale and spotting; Clemson University's extension service names a softener as the common way to reduce limescale at home. Test your water first so any treatment fits what's actually in it. Whether to install one is a plumbing decision, not a cleaning one.

Does Wrenly Home clean hard water stains?

Yes, as part of the bathroom and kitchen work. Every visit cleans and disinfects the tub or shower, sink, mirrors and fixtures. A deep clean ($175 to $429 by home size) adds shower and tub detailing: soap scum, hard-water spots on the glass and fixtures, and grout. We use non-abrasive products, keep acids off natural stone, and tell you if old buildup won't come off in one visit. We don't install softeners or do plumbing.
