Thanksgiving and holiday cleaning checklist for Peoria hosts
Short answer: Start 2 to 3 weeks out: book any deep clean, run the oven's self-clean cycle, and check that the fridge holds 40 °F or below[3]. Deep clean the kitchen, guest bathroom and floors about a week before. Start thawing a big turkey in the fridge 5 to 6 days ahead (by Friday, November 20 for a 20 to 24 lb bird and Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2026)[1]. Two days before, reset the guest bathroom and clear the counters. On the day, keep raw turkey away from everything else and get leftovers into the fridge within 2 hours[2].
Updated 2026-10-22. Guidance marked with a source number comes from that source (read on 2026-10-22); items marked Wrenly suggestion are our own advice as a cleaning service. Dates are worked out for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2026. Prices come from our live price list. Disclosure: Wrenly Home sells house cleaning in the Peoria, IL area.
Holiday hosting cleaning timeline
2 to 3 weeks before (by Thu, Nov 12)
- Book a deep clean for the week before (or the weekend before) the holiday. We confirm your visit date by email within one business day, and if we can't schedule you within 10 days you get a full refund. We don't do same-day cleans. Wrenly suggestion
- Run the oven's self-clean cycle now, not the week of the holiday, so there's time to air out the smoke and odor and to deal with anything that comes up. Before you start: take out the racks, broiler pan, cookware and any foil, wipe out loose soil, and hand-clean the door edge and the 1½-inch frame around the oven opening (the cycle doesn't get hot enough there). Keep the kitchen ventilated, and move pet birds to another closed, well-ventilated room: the fumes can kill some birds. The cycle includes a cool-down before the door unlocks. Timing: Wrenly suggestion. Steps: Whirlpool[5]; check your own owner's manual
- Put an appliance thermometer in the fridge and the freezer and check them: the fridge should be at 40 °F or below and the freezer at 0 °F. FDA[3]
- Clean out the fridge and freezer to make room for a turkey on a tray and for leftovers. Don't overpack: cold air has to circulate. FDA[3]
- Buy a frozen turkey (about 1 pound per person) and keep it in the freezer until it's time to thaw. Not in the garage, a car trunk, on the porch or in the snow. USDA FSIS[1]; CDC[2]
1 week before (Thu, Nov 19 to Sun, Nov 22)
- Deep clean day: kitchen, guest bathroom, baseboards, fans, vents, floors. See what a Wrenly deep clean covers and what's left for you. Wrenly suggestion
- Start thawing a large turkey in the fridge, in its original wrapper on a tray or pan to catch juices: about 24 hours per 4 to 5 pounds, so a 20 to 24 lb bird goes in by Friday, Nov 20 (see the thaw table). USDA FSIS[1]
- Guest room: wash and change sheets, clear a drawer and some closet space, put out a spare blanket. Wrenly suggestion
- Declutter the entry: a spot for coats, boots and a mat. From November on, salt and slush come in on shoes. Wrenly suggestion
2 days before (Tue, Nov 24)
- Guest bathroom reset: wipe the sink, faucet, toilet handle, light switches and door handles, put out clean hand towels, a full soap dispenser, a spare roll of toilet paper where guests can see it, and an empty trash can with a liner. High-touch surfaces regularly and after visitors: CDC[4]. Supplies list: Wrenly suggestion
- Clear the counters and run and empty the dishwasher so there's room to cook and a place for dirty dishes. Wrenly suggestion
- Buying a fresh turkey instead? Buy it only 1 to 2 days before you cook it and keep it in the fridge on a tray. USDA FSIS[1]
- Wipe up any drips in the fridge right away, especially from thawing meat. FDA[3]
The day before (Wed, Nov 25)
- Smaller turkeys (4 to 12 lb) need 1 to 3 days in the fridge; if you're late, thaw in cold water instead (below). A thawed turkey can stay in the fridge 1 to 2 days. USDA FSIS[1]
- Quick pass: vacuum the entry and living room, empty all trash cans, set out shallow containers for leftovers. Wrenly suggestion
Thanksgiving Day (Thu, Nov 26)
- Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw turkey. Use one cutting board for raw turkey and another for produce and bread. CDC[2]
- Don't wash the raw turkey: it spreads germs to the sink, counters and other food. If you do, clean and sanitize the sink and the area around it right away. CDC[2]
- After the raw turkey, wash cutting boards, utensils, dishes and countertops with hot soapy water before you start the next dish. CDC[2]
- Cook the turkey (and any stuffing) to 165 °F on a food thermometer, with the oven at no lower than 325 °F. USDA FSIS[1]
- Within 2 hours of cooking, get leftovers into the fridge (40 °F or colder) in shallow containers; cut a big turkey into smaller pieces so it cools fast. Discard turkey, stuffing and gravy left out longer than 2 hours. CDC[2]; USDA FSIS[1]
After the holiday (through Mon, Nov 30)
- Use refrigerated leftovers within 3 to 4 days, so Thursday's turkey by Sunday or Monday, or freeze them. Reheat to 165 °F. USDA FSIS[1]; CDC[2]
- Reset: floors, bathrooms and the kitchen. If you're hosting again in December, a recurring plan keeps the house close to guest-ready between holidays. Wrenly suggestion
Turkey thaw dates for Thanksgiving 2026
USDA's guidance is about 24 hours in the fridge (40 °F or below) for every 4 to 5 pounds, or about 30 minutes per pound in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes[1]. The last column is our arithmetic for a Thursday, November 26 dinner, using the longer end of USDA's range. A turkey thawed in the fridge can stay there 1 to 2 days, so starting early is fine; a turkey thawed in cold water or the microwave must be cooked right away[1].
| Turkey size | In the fridge | In cold water | Put it in the fridge by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 to 12 lb | 1 to 3 days | 2 to 6 hours | Mon, Nov 23 |
| 12 to 16 lb | 3 to 4 days | 6 to 8 hours | Sun, Nov 22 |
| 16 to 20 lb | 4 to 5 days | 8 to 10 hours | Sat, Nov 21 |
| 20 to 24 lb | 5 to 6 days | 10 to 12 hours | Fri, Nov 20 |
Never thaw a turkey on the counter: after more than 2 hours at room temperature it's unsafe even if the center is still frozen, because germs grow fast between 40 °F and 140 °F[2].

Booking a deep clean for someone else
A clean house before the guests arrive is a practical present for a parent, a friend who's hosting Thanksgiving or Christmas, or someone who just had a baby or moved in. You can book it for them the same way you'd book your own:
- Get the price for their home (bedrooms and bathrooms) on the deep-clean quote.
- In the booking form, enter their street address and ZIP, and your own name, email and phone.
- In the notes, write their name and phone number, the date or week you have in mind (for example "the week before Christmas"), and anything about access, pets or parking.
- Pay on Stripe. The receipt and our date confirmation come to you, by email within one business day; if we can't schedule it, you get a full refund.
Honest limits: we don't sell gift cards or open-dated gift certificates yet, so a gifted clean needs an address and a date when you book. Someone needs to be home to let the cleaner in, or to leave a key or door code. If it's a surprise, say so in the notes and tell us how to arrange access; we won't contact them until you say it's OK. WELCOME40 ($40 off) works on a gifted clean too, as long as it's the first Wrenly booking for that email address.
Frequently asked questions
When should I deep clean before Thanksgiving?
About a week before, so the house is clean but you aren't cleaning the night before cooking. In 2026 Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, so a deep clean between Thursday, November 19 and Monday, November 23 works well, followed by a quick bathroom and floor touch-up on Tuesday or Wednesday.
How far ahead should I book a holiday cleaning?
Two to three weeks ahead if you can. After you book, we confirm your visit date by email within one business day; if we can't schedule you within 10 days you get a full refund. We don't offer same-day cleaning. Cleans run Monday to Saturday.
Should I clean my oven before Thanksgiving?
Yes, but do it early. Running the self-clean cycle 2 to 3 weeks before the holiday gives the smoke and odor time to clear and leaves time to deal with anything that comes up. Whirlpool's guidance is to self-clean before the oven gets heavily soiled, remove the racks, cookware and foil first, keep the kitchen ventilated, and move pet birds to another closed, well-ventilated room because the fumes can kill some birds. Check your own oven's manual. A Wrenly deep clean can also clean inside the oven on request.
How long does a turkey take to thaw in the fridge?
About 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds, per USDA: 1 to 3 days for 4 to 12 lb, 3 to 4 days for 12 to 16 lb, 4 to 5 days for 16 to 20 lb, and 5 to 6 days for 20 to 24 lb. For a Thursday, November 26 dinner, a 20 to 24 lb turkey should be in the fridge by Friday, November 20. In cold water it takes about 30 minutes per pound, changing the water every 30 minutes, and the turkey must be cooked right away. Never thaw it on the counter.
What temperature should my fridge be for Thanksgiving?
40 °F or below, with the freezer at 0 °F, according to the FDA. Most fridge dials don't show a temperature, so use an inexpensive appliance thermometer. Leftovers go in within 2 hours of cooking and should be eaten within 3 to 4 days.
What does a guest bathroom need before company comes?
Clean sink, faucet, toilet and mirror; wiped light switches and door handles (the CDC says to clean high-touch surfaces regularly and after visitors); clean hand towels; a full soap dispenser; a visible spare roll of toilet paper; and an empty trash can with a liner. A deep clean does the scrubbing; the supplies are yours to set out.
How much does a pre-holiday deep clean cost in Peoria?
A Wrenly Home deep clean is $175 for a studio or 1-bedroom, $209 for 2 bedrooms, $269 for 3, $339 for 4 and $429 for 5, plus $25 for each extra bathroom, supplies included. New customers can use code WELCOME40 for $40 off the first clean.
Can I give a house cleaning as a gift?
Yes, by booking it for them: get the price for their home, enter their address in the booking form, and put their name, phone and the date you have in mind in the notes. You pay, and the receipt and date confirmation come to you. We don't sell gift cards or open-dated gift certificates yet, so the booking needs an address and a date; if we can't schedule it, you get a full refund. Details are in the booking-for-someone-else steps above.
Can I book a cleaning for after Thanksgiving?
Yes. Book it the same way as any clean: a one-time deep clean, or the first visit of a recurring plan (for a 3-bedroom home, $269 first, then $165 every two weeks). Pick a preferred day and we confirm the date by email within one business day.
